Whereas a claim in the field of obstetrics might have resulted in a pay-out of around Euro 150,000 ten to fifteen years ago, the same claim might generate expenses of up to Euro 2 million today.
Insurers are having to come to terms with a growing discrepancy between claims expenditure and income from premiums, while hospitals are faced with rising expectations on the part of the patient, with their image very firmly on the line.
